New research on red light therapy for cerebral palsy (CP)

Spastic diplegia is the most common form of cerebral palsy; children with spastic diplegia suffer from muscle fatigue and spasticity which leads to reduced muscle strength, impaired motor control, and many functional impairments including constipation. The effect of red light therapy has been shown to be positive as it improves muscle pain and spasticity and reduces lactic acid levels. Forty children with spastic diplegia were selected and divided into two groups: A and B. Group A received red light therapy along with physiotherapy. Group B received only physiotherapy sessions. Blood lactic acid levels were also tested in both groups; all evaluations were done before treatment and after one month of follow-up. The researchers found a significant difference between the two groups regarding pain, strength, and blood lactic acid levels after one month of follow-up. Red light therapy has a good effect on increasing muscle strength, reducing blood lactic acid levels, and decreasing pain.
