Generally

What is red light therapy?

Red light therapy is a form of light treatment that uses visible red light and invisible near-infrared light at specific wavelengths. These types of light reach different depths in the skin and are absorbed by the cells’ “energy engines,” the mitochondria. The light can thereby support the cells’ natural functions, which many people feel may contribute to improved skin quality, increased energy, faster recovery, and an overall sense of well-being. The treatment is painless, natural, and free from UV radiation.

How does red light therapy work biologically?

When red and near-infrared light is absorbed by the mitochondria, the cells' powerhouses, it can support the production of ATP, the energy cells use to function. The light may also increase local blood circulation, thereby supporting oxygenation in the area you are treating.

Is red light therapy the same as an infrared sauna?

No, although both use infrared light, they work in different ways. An infrared sauna primarily uses long-wave infrared light (FIR) to heat the body and induce sweating. Red light therapy uses short-wave near-infrared light (NIR) as well as visible red light to affect cellular functions without noticeably heating the body. It is more about providing cells with light energy than raising body temperature.

Is there research supporting red light therapy?

Yes, this is not a new trend. In research, the method is called photobiomodulation, and it has been investigated in many clinical studies. Studies have shown that red and near-infrared light may help relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and speed up recovery after exercise.

A systematic review in The Lancet showed that treatment with low-intensity red and near-infrared laser light reduced neck pain (Chow et al. 2009). A meta-analysis of 13 studies showed that the light may improve muscle performance and accelerate recovery, especially when used before exercise (Leal-Junior et al. 2015). In a review, researcher Michael Hamblin describes how the light may reduce inflammation, both where it is applied and throughout the body (Hamblin 2017).

Skin

Can red light therapy help with wrinkles and fine lines?

Many use red light therapy as part of their beauty routine specifically to support the skin's firmness and radiance. The light can help the skin feel firmer and more even over time by promoting the skin's natural renewal process.

Does red light therapy help with acne and impurities?

Some people find that regular use of red light therapy helps the skin feel cleaner and more balanced. It can help soothe the skin and support its natural function, making it a valued complement for oily or unbalanced skin.

Can red light therapy give you more radiant skin and a more even skin tone?

Many people report that their skin looks more radiant after a few weeks of regular use. Red light therapy may support the skin's microcirculation, which can give it a healthier and more even appearance.

Is red light therapy good for dry skin or during the winter?

Many people use red light as extra support for their skin during the colder months. The light can help the skin feel less tight. It also works well alongside your usual skincare routine.

Training and recovery

How can red light therapy support recovery after exercise?

Studies have shown that red and near-infrared light can improve muscle performance and promote faster recovery, especially when the light is used before exercise (Leal-Junior et al. 2015). That is why many athletes and fitness enthusiasts use red light therapy as part of their recovery routine. Many also find that their bodies feel more supple and energized the next day.

Is red light therapy good for energy levels?

Some of our customers feel more energized when they use red light regularly. One explanation may be that the light supports the mitochondria, which are responsible for the cells’ energy production.

Is red light therapy right for you if you train a lot?

Yes, many people who train a lot use red light therapy as part of their recovery. It is also easy to fit into your daily routine, since a session only takes 10-20 minutes.

Use

How long does a treatment take?

A treatment usually takes 10-20 minutes, depending on which product you have and what you want to treat. Our larger panels are more powerful and require less time, while a smaller panel may need a little longer. You can find the recommended time for your product in the product manual.

How do I know that red light therapy is making a difference?

The simplest thing is to monitor it yourself. Try taking a photo of your skin once a week in the same lighting so you can compare over time. If you use red light for recovery, you can note how your body feels before and after. Results come gradually, so use it regularly for a few weeks before evaluating.

How far from the panel should I sit?

For our panels, we recommend a distance of approximately 10-20 cm. The closer you sit, the higher the intensity over a smaller area. If you sit farther away, the light covers a larger area but with lower intensity. You can use The Robin Gen 2 at a distance of 0-20 cm, while our LED masks are worn directly against the face. You can find the recommendation for your specific product in the product manual.

What time of day can I use red light therapy?

You can use red light therapy whenever it suits you. Many people enjoy doing it in the evening as a relaxing moment before bedtime, while others prefer a treatment in the morning. The most important thing is to find a time that makes it easy to be consistent.
